Accuracy
We tested the Code Finder on 150 real rulings that its classifier never learned from. Here is how often it answered, how often it was right when it answered, and the misses we counted. The language model behind Entrydesk AI is trained by its maker on public text, so we cannot show it never saw a public ruling.
Box 1The short version
Answered on its own: 30 of 150. Right when it answered: 30 of 30.
answered on its own (20.0%). 95% range 14.4% to 27.1%. The other 120 went to an expert, marked Needs expert.
of those answers were right at the first six digits (100.0%). 95% range 88.6% to 100.0%.
That is the whole trade: Entrydesk AI names a code only when it is sure, and otherwise says Needs expert and shows its leads. Both numbers matter. Read them together.
Box 2The method
What was tested, in plain words
- What was tested. The Code Finder, the part of Entrydesk that suggests the code for a product and says why.
- The rulings. 150 real rulings that US Customs published after the classifier's training data ended, so the classifier never learned from them. The language model behind Entrydesk AI is trained by its maker on public text, so we cannot show it never saw a public ruling. Customs officers wrote each ruling's product description and gave the code. The 150 were drawn by chance with a fixed seed, so anyone who repeats the draw gets the same 150. At most 5 come from any one tariff chapter, so they cover 55 chapters. They were drawn from 756 rulings in 70 chapters.
- What Entrydesk saw. Only the description, as one goods line with no quantity, price or origin. It never saw the code US Customs gave.
- What Entrydesk did. The same steps as on a shipment: a trained classifier and a tariff search list the candidate lines, Entrydesk AI chooses up to three and gives reasons, and code checks the choice. See each step on a real ruling. Lines it was not sure enough about were marked Needs expert.
- How right was counted. A code counts as right when its first six digits equal the first six digits of the code US Customs gave. Those six digits are shared by the countries that use the international tariff system, including the US and Nigeria, so the two codes can be compared at that level.
- The 95% range. A test on 150 lines is a small look at a bigger picture. The 95% range is the span the true rate probably sits in, given how few lines were tested. A wide range means we know less.
Box 3The numbers
How often it answered, and how often it was right, out of 150
- 30 answered, and right
- 52 held back as Needs expert, where the first lead was the right code
- 8 held back, where the right code was the second or third lead
- 60 held back, where the right code was not among the leads
| Measure | Count | Share | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answered on its ownNot marked Needs expert | 30 of 150 | 20.0% | 14.4% to 27.1% |
| Answered, first suggestion rightCompared at the first six digits | 30 of 30 | 100.0% | 88.6% to 100.0% |
| Answered, one of the three suggestions right | 30 of 30 | 100.0% | 88.6% to 100.0% |
| Wrong answers shown as answersAnswered, and the first suggestion was wrong. Share of the answered lines | 0 of 30 | 0.0% | 0.0% to 11.3% |
| Wrong answers shown as answers, out of every line | 0 of 150 | 0.0% | 0.0% to 2.5% |
| Counting every line: first suggestion rightA Needs expert line counts by its first lead | 82 of 150 | 54.7% | 46.7% to 62.4% |
| Counting every line: one of the three right | 90 of 150 | 60.0% | 52.0% to 67.5% |
Read the last two rows with care. Counting every line, the first suggestion was right on 82 of 150. That counts the 30 answers plus the 52 Needs expert lines whose first lead was right. Those lines were not given as answers. A person had to check them.
Counting every line, the first suggestion was not right on 68 of 150, and none of the three was right on 60 of 150.
On the 120 Needs expert lines, the first lead was right on 52 (43.3%, 95% range 34.8% to 52.3%) and one of the three leads was right on 60 (50.0%, 95% range 41.2% to 58.8%). They are leads for a person to check, not answers.
Zero wrong answers out of 30 is not a proven zero. With only 30 answered lines, the true wrong share could still be as high as 11.3%.
Box 4What it is, and is not
What this test is, and what it is not
What it is
- Real rulings, written by Customs officers, that the classifier never learned from.
- Scored at the first six digits, which the countries using the international tariff system share.
- Reported with coverage beside every number: how often it answered, and how often it was right when it did.
- Run with the weights that were set before the run. The 60% cut-off is a starting value that we did not tune on these rulings.
- Open about its misses. The numbers above count every line, including the ones that missed. The 13 cases below are picked by hand from the 150.
What it is not
- Easier than real life. Customs officers wrote these descriptions after deciding, so they are longer and cleaner than invoice lines and some carry clues. Treat these numbers as the best case for this kind of text.
- Not Nigerian invoices. These are US rulings, written by Customs officers.
- Not the full code. Only the first six digits were compared, not the eight or ten digit tariff line.
- Not a promise for every product. The 150 are spread over 55 chapters on purpose, with at most 5 from any one. That gives rare chapters more weight than real traffic would.
- Not the whole tariff. The tariff searched has 6,385 lines and covers only part of the full tariff, so some goods have no matching line.
- Not always shown the right code. The right code was among the lines Entrydesk AI was shown on 94 of 150 lines (62.7%, 95% range 54.7% to 70.0%). When it was not shown, Entrydesk AI could not pick it.
- Not mostly answered. 120 of 150 lines went to an expert: 96 because Entrydesk AI said it was not sure, and 24 because the best pick scored under 60%.
Box 5The cases
13 cases picked from the 150, including misses
These are the same 13 cases as in the replay on the home page. They are picked from the 150 to show answers, near misses and Needs expert lines: 5 answered and right, and 8 Needs expert. Of those 8, the right code was among the leads on 4, and not among them on 4. Open a case to see its codes, reasons and tariff text.

Why: Irbesartan tablets are a medicament in dosage form (75 mg, 150 mg, 300 mg tablets) for treatment of hypertension; 3004.90.90.00 covers medicaments consisting of mixed or unmixed products for therapeutic use, put up in measured doses, 'other … other', which is the correct residual line for a pharmaceutical not covered by a more specific subheading. The active ingredient is not a hormone, antibiotic, or alkaloid, so the 'other' line applies.

Why: If the acrylic release coating and metallic layer mean the film is 'combined with other materials', it would fall outside 3920 and into 3921.90.10.00 (other plates/sheets of plastics, not printed); 3921.90.10.00 covers that residual category for unprinted combined plastic sheets.

Other plates, sheets, film, foil and strip, of plastics. > Other: > Printed
Why: 3921.90.20.00 (3921.90.20.00) covers printed other plastic sheets; the holographic transfer film has a holographic pattern that could be considered a printed/decorated surface, making this a weak alternative for that specific variant only.
Tariff line 3921.90.20.00, from the ECOWAS tariff Entrydesk loaded (partial)
A reason may cite parts of the ruling that the shortened description leaves out.
Needs expert. Entrydesk AI is not sure about this line: The films are metallized and coated PET sheets; whether they fall under 3920.62 (non-cellular, non-reinforced PET sheet) or 3921.90 (other plates/sheets of plastics, which covers combined/coated materials) depends on whether the acrylic/metallic coating constitutes 'combined with other materials', a technical determination needed from the agent. A declarant checks the tariff or asks Customs for an advance ruling. What US Customs gave3920.62 at the first six digits, shared by the countries that use the international tariff system, including the US and Nigeria.

Other furniture and parts thereof. > Furniture of other materials, including cane, osier, bamboo or similar materials : > Other
Why: A storage ottoman is a piece of furniture; 9403.89.00.00 covers 'Other furniture' of materials other than wood/metal/plastics (e.g. cane, bamboo, similar). Without knowing the material this is the only furniture candidate and is a probable fit, but material confirmation is needed.

A reason may cite parts of the ruling that the shortened description leaves out.
Needs expert. Why: Glucagon Injection in 1 mg vials is a medicament in dosage form for therapeutic use (severe hypoglycemia); 3004.90.90.00 covers 'Other' medicaments not elsewhere specified under heading 3004, which is the correct heading for put-up medicaments.

Why: Glucagon is a polypeptide hormone; 2937.19.00.00 covers 'Other' polypeptide/protein/glycoprotein hormones under heading 2937, applicable if the goods are classified as bulk chemical rather than a put-up medicament.

Hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes, natural or reproduced by synthesis; derivatives and structural analogues thereof, including chain modified polypeptides, used primarily as hormones. > Other
Why: 2937.90.00.00 is the residual 'Other' under heading 2937 for hormones; weaker fit than 2937.19.00.00 because glucagon is specifically a polypeptide hormone covered by the polypeptide subheading.

A reason may cite parts of the ruling that the shortened description leaves out.
Needs expert. Entrydesk AI is not sure about this line: Glucagon is a polypeptide hormone; when imported in dosage form (1 mg vials) it may fall under Chapter 30 (medicaments) rather than Chapter 29 (bulk hormones), and the correct chapter depends on whether it is put up in measured doses for retail sale. Why: The item is a 22-piece set comprising a ratchet handle, bit holder, and screwdriver bits put up in a molded case for retail sale; 8206.00.00.00 covers 'tools of two or more of headings 82.02 to 82.05, put up in sets for retail sale', which precisely matches this multi-tool retail set.

Why: 8205.40.00.00 covers 'screwdrivers' under heading 82.05; the set is predominantly screwdriver bits and a ratchet handle, so if not classified as a set under 82.06, the screwdriver character could point here, but 82.06 (8206.00.00.00) is the better fit.
